"Inclusive" might be one of the most worn-out words in business right now. It shows up in mission statements, gets printed on tote bags, and trends every June. And somewhere along the way, a lot of people stopped believing it — because they've watched too many brands say it loudly in public and not mean a word of it.
We get the skepticism. We share it, honestly. So rather than add one more "everyone's welcome!" banner to the pile, we'd rather explain what that line actually means when it's real — and why we treat belonging as the default setting instead of a campaign we switch on.
The Problem With "Inclusive" as a Trend
Here's what makes people roll their eyes: a company stays silent all year, then rolls out the rainbow logo or the feel-good ad right on schedule, sells some product, and goes quiet again the moment it's no longer convenient. The values turn out to be seasonal.
That's not inclusion. That's marketing wearing inclusion as a costume.
Real belonging doesn't have a season, and it doesn't come with an asterisk. It's not something you advertise — it's something people feel when they interact with you. And you can't fake the feeling. People know the difference between being genuinely welcomed and being marketed to.
What "By Default" Actually Means
When we say belonging is the default here, we mean it's the starting point, not the reward.
A lot of places make you earn your way into being treated well. You have to be the right kind of customer, fit the right mold, not ask too many questions, not need anything unusual. Belonging becomes conditional — something you qualify for.
We flip that. The assumption here is that you belong, full stop, before you've done anything to prove it. Different background, different identity, different way of moving through the world — none of that is a barrier to entry. It's just people, and people are welcome. That's the whole policy.
It sounds almost too simple to say out loud. But "you're welcome here as you are" is genuinely rare to actually mean, and we think that's a little sad. So we'd rather be one of the places that does.
Why It's Not Political to Us
We'll be straight about something: we're not interested in turning the brand into a political identity. Belonging isn't a partisan position to us — it's just basic decency, and decency doesn't belong to one side of anything.
What that means in practice is we're not here to lecture anybody or make people pass a values quiz before they buy a shirt. We're here to make good stuff and treat everyone who walks through the door — every background, every belief, every walk of life — like they matter. You don't have to agree with us about everything to be welcome here. You just have to be a person. That's the bar.
How You Can Actually Tell
Talk is cheap, so here's what genuine inclusion tends to look like in the wild, versus the gimmick version:
Gimmick: loud once a year. Real: quiet and constant.
Gimmick: a slogan on the homepage. Real: how you're treated when something goes wrong with your order.
Gimmick: "everyone's welcome" with fine print. Real: no fine print.
Gimmick: inclusion as a marketing department. Real: inclusion as the owner answering your message like a human being.
We're not claiming we nail it perfectly every time — nobody does. But the intent is baked in, not bolted on, and that's the part that actually matters.
The Point
"Everyone's welcome" should be a promise, not a slogan. If it's real, you feel it in the small stuff — the patience, the lack of runaround, the sense that you're a person and not a transaction. If it's a gimmick, you feel that too.
